The Great Ocean Road is a 243 kilometer stretch of road that hugs the seaside cliffs along the south-eastern coast of Australia between Torquay and Allansford. It is listed on the Australian National Heritage register, and the iconic road winds through various terrains such as craggy cliffs, marvelous beaches, and soaring bluffs flanked by green countryside.

The road was dedicated to soldiers killed during WWI, but besides this, it is one of the best road trip highways for surf enthusiasts. The coastline that the Great Ocean Road follows is known to have some of the best surfing worldwide, and it draws many visitors each year. So grab the snacks, pack your board shorts, and get ready for this road trip; we’re looking at some of the must-visit beaches, towns, and other attractions along the Great Ocean Road.

Beaches

Bells Beach is one of the most popular surf beaches along the Great Ocean Road, thanks to its excellent variety of surf and notoriety as the location of the Rip Curl Pro competition. It is about five kilometers from Torquay, and the annual event sees thousands of people flock to its beaches.

Fairhaven Beach is a stunning six-kilometer stretch of beach that has excellent surfing and patrolled areas for swimming. The surfing is best by the eastern end of the beach near the Surf Life Saving Club, and that’s where most surfers congregate. Fairhaven Beach is a great option for those wanting a less crowded place for surfing or those looking to swim in the ocean.

Johanna Beach is located near Glenaire and is known as one of the best surf beaches that the Great Ocean Road offers. The waves here have a reputation for rapid jumps in size, and it is unpatrolled, meaning Joanna Beach is recommended for experienced surfers. The area also has camping, fishing, and stunning coastal views.

Logans Beach is a great place to stop for those looking to see some wildlife and catch a wave. Although swimming in the ocean here is not suitable, majestic whales can often be seen within 100 meters of the shore, meaning visitors get spectacular views and enjoy excellent surf.

Towns and Other Attractions
